Squarespace
vs a custom website
The best-looking builder in the category, compared honestly against a built site.
The short answer
Squarespace is the right answer for a visually led business that does not depend on local search. If "near me" searches are meant to fill your calendar, the template constraints start costing you.
Squarespace makes the best-looking default sites of any builder, and for a photographer, a designer, a restaurant with strong photography or a boutique, that is most of the job. The templates are genuinely well designed, the type is good, and a business with decent photos can end up with something better looking than a lot of custom work. Credit where it is due.
The trade is that a template is a shape, and your business has to fit inside it. That is fine when what you need is a beautiful page about a beautiful thing. It gets awkward when what you need is one page per service, each written for a different search, plus location pages, plus a quote form that asks six specific questions. You can force that structure into a template, but you spend the effort fighting the design system rather than building the thing.
The second consideration is the same one every hosted platform carries: you are renting. The site lives in Squarespace's format, there is no clean export, and leaving means rebuilding. Worth knowing up front rather than discovering in year three.

The differences that actually matter.
| Squarespace | A build with us | |
|---|---|---|
| Design out of the box | Excellent, the category's best | Designed around your business, not a template |
| Upfront cost | Effectively none | $997 to $3,497, fixed and quoted first |
| Monthly cost | A platform subscription per site | $20 to $30 hosting, billed to you directly |
| Local SEO structure | Possible, but you build it inside a template | Service and location pages, schema, profile setup included |
| Who writes the content | You | Us, from one conversation |
| Ownership | You rent the site; no clean export | Yours outright |
When Squarespace is
the right answer.
The work is visual and the photos are strong
Photography, design, venues, boutiques. The templates flatter good images and get you a beautiful site quickly.
You have few pages and no complex structure
A handful of pages, one clear message. Squarespace handles that as well as anything and faster than most.
Search is not your main channel
If customers arrive from Instagram, referrals or a physical location, the SEO ceiling barely matters.
You want to run it yourself
The editor is pleasant and the constraints keep it looking tidy even after you have been in there a few times.
When a build
earns its money.
You need a page per service and per area
Local search rewards that structure, and a template is a difficult place to build it well.
Speed matters for your customers
Template sites carry weight for features you may not use. On a weak mobile signal that is lost visitors.
Something has to integrate
Job software, a specific booking system, a quote flow with real logic. Builders handle the common cases and stop.
You want to own it
Code, content and domain, movable to any host, with another developer able to take over at any point.
If you decide to move
Moving off Squarespace
As with any hosted builder, there is no clean export, so the site is rebuilt rather than transferred. Content, images and the domain come across, and the redirect map protects whatever rankings the old site had. If your Squarespace design is working, we will happily build toward it rather than away from it.
How a redesign and migration worksIs Squarespace good for local SEO?
It is capable enough for the basics and it will not stop you ranking. What it makes harder is the structure local search rewards — a real page for each service and each area you cover, all fast on a phone. In an uncontested market that is fine. In a competitive one, working against the template costs you.
Our Squarespace site looks great. Should we still switch?
If it looks great and it is producing work, no. Switching is worth it when the site looks good and the phone still is not ringing, which usually means the structure and the local signals are missing rather than the design.
Can you build something as nice as a Squarespace template?
That is the bar we design to, and it is a fair one. The difference is that the layout follows what your customers are trying to do — call, book, request a quote — rather than what the template was shaped around.
