The short answer
If you need something online this week and your budget is nearly zero, Wix is a reasonable answer. If the website is meant to generate calls from search, a built site usually earns the difference back.
Wix is a genuinely capable product and the snobbery about it is mostly unearned. Millions of businesses run on it, the editor is the most approachable in the category, and for a business that needs an address, some photos and a contact form online by Friday it does the job for the price of a couple of coffees a month. Anyone who tells you it is unusable is selling you something.
Where it gets expensive is not the subscription. It is the ceiling. Builder sites carry the machinery for every feature the platform offers whether your page uses it or not, which shows up as page weight, and page weight shows up as visitors leaving before your page appears. You can build a fast site on Wix, but you are working against the default rather than with it, and most small businesses do not have the time or inclination to fight that.
The second thing to understand before committing is that you are renting. Your pages live in Wix's format and there is no clean export. Moving to anything else means rebuilding, which is a cost you do not see until the day you want to leave. That is not a scandal, it is simply the trade, and it is worth knowing which side of it you are on before you have three years of content in there.

You need something live this week
A weekend and a template gets you a presentable site. Nothing we do is faster than that, and a real site now beats a better site in a month.
The budget genuinely is not there yet
A new business with no revenue should not spend a thousand dollars on a website. Start on a builder and replace it when the work is paying for it.
The site is a formality
If your work comes from referrals and the site exists so people can check you are real, a builder covers that completely.
You want to edit everything yourself, constantly
The Wix editor is genuinely good at this. If daily fiddling is the point, that is a real advantage.

Competing for "emergency plumber Saginaw" needs speed, structure and page-level control that a builder makes harder than it should be.
You want to own what you paid for
Domain in your name, code and content yours, movable to any host. On a builder you are renting the whole arrangement indefinitely.
Your customers are on phones with bad signal
Basements, parking lots, congested downtown networks. Heavy pages lose those visitors, and they were the ones about to call.
You need it to do something specific
Booking wired to the system you already use, a quote form that asks the right questions, an integration with your job software.

There is no clean export, so a move means rebuilding rather than transferring. What does carry across is your domain, your content and your images, and we handle the redirect map so the pages that rank keep ranking. The domain comes into your own name as part of it.
How a redesign and migration worksIs Wix bad for SEO?
No, and that claim is out of date. Wix supports the fundamentals — titles, meta descriptions, structured data, sitemaps. The practical difficulty is page weight and less control over how a page loads, which matters in a competitive local market and matters very little in an uncontested one. It is a disadvantage, not a disqualification.
Can I move my Wix site to my own?
You can move, but not by exporting. Wix has no clean export, so the site is rebuilt rather than transferred. Your domain, content and images come across, and with a proper redirect map the rankings you have built up carry over too. That mapping is the part worth being careful about.
Is it worth switching if Wix is working?
Often not, and we will say so. If you are ranking, the phone rings and the site loads quickly on a phone, leave it alone. The switch is worth it when search is supposed to be producing work and is not, or when you have hit something the platform will not let you do.
